A hostel in Jamaica is taking cleaning up the country’s beaches into their own hands by offering every visitor a free joint in exchange for collecting a bucket of trash off the beach.
In Long Bay, Portland Jamaica a hostel owned by German owner Marian Erbach (33) who affectionately named it Germaican-Hostel is trying to encourage locals to clean up the beaches with a little green incentive.
For each bucket of trash collected from the beach the owner is offering guests a ‘free spliff’ for their service in the hopes that more and more visitors will start cleaning the beaches.
This movement from a local Jamaican business man went viral as many people were excited and impressed with the selfless act of offering up something of value from his own pocket in an effort to clean the beach and slowly save the planet, one bucket at a time.

Erbach came up with this giving idea, that he hopes others will get behind, when he became sick of seeing the beaches dirty and decided to roll 56 joints equal to 56 grams of weed one day, he did this because under Jamaican law 56 grams is the maximum amount of cannabis that one person can legal carry at any given time that is only punishable by a fine.
As the Mother City struggles with plastic on our beaches just as much if not more than Jamaica does, a similar idea for local businesses or even local government could help turn the situation around.
