The NSRI as well as authorities have urged public caution along the Southern Cape Coastline. This follows reports of noticeable increased shark activity between Natures Valley and Mossel Bay.

Beaches in Plettenberg Bay were closed by Bitou Municipal Authorities yesterday, Monday 11 December. This was done as a precautionary measure due to sightings of escalated shark activity close to shore.

Beach-goers have been urged to follow local Municipal Authority warnings, and only go to beaches where and when lifeguards are on duty. The NSRI also urges the public to obey the lifeguards safety instructions, swim between the red and yellow flags posted by lifeguards, and leave the water if instructed to do so.

NSRI stations carry emergency medical shark kits, as well as on all rescue boats and NSRI rescue vehicles. NSRI medics are also carrying these emergency medical shark kits in their private vehicles in the effort to ensure the quickest response to an incident.

Caution has been strongly advised to bathers, divers, paddlers, spear fishermen, anglers and the public to be aware of the increased shark activity along the Southern Cape Coastline, between Natures Valley and Mossel Bay.

The Sea Rescue National emergency number from a cellphone is 112. Visit the NSRI website to get local NSRI emergency numbers.
