Local Springbok captain Siya Kolisi has been nominated in the 2019 Laureus World Sports Awards, the only South African to have been placed in the running across all categories in the esteemed awards.

Kolisi has been nominated in the Sporting Moment of the Year Award category, acknowledging his standing as the first black Springbok Captain in history and for leading the team against England in June 2018.

The annual Laureus World Sports Awards recognises talented men and women in the sporting world and their achievements of the previous year. With a massive international following, the awards ceremony is known as the “Oscars of the sporting industry”.

There are seven categories in the international awards, from Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year to the Comeback category, the Disability category and more.

The Sporting Moment of the Year category acknowledges those who have stood out as individuals who continuously display sporting values such as fair play, sportsmanship, humanity, overcoming adversity, dedication, and helping others. There are 10 finalists who have been nominated in the category.

The public can vote for their favourite finalist, and the winner will be announced at the Laureus awards ceremony in Monaco on February 18 2019.

Laureus Sport for Good gives mention to Kolisi’s nomination in a social media post.

“Siya Kolisi made history last year when he became the first ever black captain of the Springboks, leading his team out against England. A special moment for him and for South Africa.”

Kolisi is flying the nation’s flag high in the awards. Locals can vote for who they think should win the Laureus World Sports Awards here.
