With the nationwide lockdown being reduced to level 2, citizens across the Western cape have been taking advantage of their newly found freedom. However, the relaxing of lockdown regulations also means the act of illegal street racing has seen a resurgence. This has lead to law enforcement authorities having to clamp down on illegal street racers.
On Thursday, August 27 law enforcement officers issued 224 fines for various offences during an illegal street race in Bellville. Two arrests were made, one forĀ driving under the influence of alcohol and another for being in the possession of a fraudulent driver’s licence, reportsĀ SABC News.
In response to the increase in illegal street racing, the City of Cape Town has called upon the provincial government to strengthen the provincial traffic act with regulations that specifically focus on the illegal activity of street racing.
Alderman JP Smith, The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security has been quoted by SABC as saying: “the blatant disregard for public safety shows that criminals have no respect for the rights of others. Those who participate in the act of illegal street racing put the lives law abiding citizens at risk.”
The city does however support and encourage those who have taken their illegal street racing activities off the streets and onto the racetracks like Killarney International Raceway and Tygerberg raceway.
