Sir Sean Connery, the Scottish actor best known for his portrayal of secret agent James Bond, has died at the age of 90.

The family of the star confirmed his death, although no cause was given.

Connery was the first to take on the role of 007 for the big screen back in 1962. He went on to play the role in seven of the films, even being called back into the role after a break for  Diamonds Are Forever and Never Say Never Again.

After starting out in poverty in Edinburgh, he joined the Navy at 17 before being discharged. Upon moving to London, he joined the chorus of the stage play South Pacific and began building a career in show businesses from there.

He has won many accolades over his long career including an Academy Award, two BAFTA Awards, and three Golden Globes, including the Cecil B. DeMille Award and a Henrietta Award.

He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2000 for his contribution to the arts and named People’s sexiest man of the century in 1999.

Connery managed to make his way out of the Bond pigeon hole and starred in incredible films such as  The Wind and the Lion, The Man Who Would Be King, Indiana Jones, and the Last Crusade, and The Untouchables.

He celebrated the achievement of his 90th birthday in August.
