Motorists can expect to fork out more money for their national licence transaction fees this year as the Minister of Transport, Blade Nzimande, has announced a 14% increase to fees paid to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).
This fee increase was gazetted on Friday, March 8 2019, and equates to a price hike of R10.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation Act decrees that local licensing centres pay the RTMC a transactional fee for each South African motorist it processes. This additional fee of R82 is being added to the existing annual licence fee.
Although the increase has been gazetted, it in unclear when exactly it will be officially implemented.
This is the second fee increase by the RTMC in just over a year – in February 2018, transactional fees were increased by a whopping R30. This brought prices up from R42 to R72.
The new increase is expected to affect drivers from different parts of the country differently as licensing fees differ from province to province. The weight and size of the vehicle also plays a role in determining how much the licence fees will cost.
Western Cape motorists may expect to pay R192 for a new licence in 2019, and can pay between R288 and R966 to have their annual licence renewed.
