Eskom announced that load shedding is suspended as of 8am on Sunday, February 7, as it is no longer required since the power utility’s electricity generation capacity has sufficiently recovered.
Eskom implemented Stage 2 load shedding at 12pm on Friday [February 5] after five generating units were shut down at Medupi Power Station because of coal complications related to the heavy rain in the Lephalale area. The power outages were expected to last until Sunday night.
“Since Friday evening, Eskom teams returned four generation units to service at the Medupi Power Station as the coal constraints improved,” said Eskom in a statement.
“Another two units also returned to service during the same period while the emergency generation reserves have sufficiently recovered.”
The energy provider, however, said that the risk of load shedding during this period remains elevated due to ongoing maintenance.
“We currently have 4 664MW on planned maintenance, while another 13 539MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns,” Eskom said.
