While, the National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture is still struggling to account for R300-million worth of funds meant for the industry role-players affected by lockdown, the Western Cape government is continuing to support the sector.

According to a statement from the Democratic Alliance(DA), it has welcomed the R12.9 million currently being distributed to various sports federations across the province.

DA Western Cape Spokesperson on Cultural Affairs and Sport, Reagen Allen said the support by the provincial government shows the extent to which they are fighting to ensure those sectors adversely affected by the pandemic are offered a lifeline.

“Allen said, the Department has shown resilience and attentiveness to the struggles of those that fall within its mandate.

As such, I will be attending the Cape Metro handover today, April 14 to witness the impact of this department’s delivery first-hand.”

He added, industry representatives from the National Department have conducted a sit-in for over 40 days and the relief funds still haven’t be found.

“From an oversight and accountability perspective, I will be writing to the Provincial Minister for clarity on how allocations were determined and the effect that this funding will have on the sector in the province,” Allen added.

The Western Cape will also look to boost a responsive government that is working tirelessly to mitigate the negative impact of lockdown regulations.
