Locals are warned to be cautious while traveling in Hout Bay, as action has been reported in the area and Harbour Road has been closed.
In the early hours of Tuesday, September 17, protestors took to the streets of Hout Bay. A truck was burnt in the late hours of Monday evening on Harbour and Skipper roads.
Protestors left the area later in the morning after causing some damage but indicated that they would return shortly. Since then, protestors have returned to the Hout Bay streets and are burning fires in the roadways.
Currently, contractor’s scaffolding is being used as fuel for fires and all agencies are converging on the scene to manage the situation.
The entrance to Harbour Road has been closed until further notice. The City has also cancelled at least five MyCiti stops to Hout Bay due to the protest action. Protests have reportedly sparked in the area due to the sale of land that was originally promised for affordable housing.
“Community leaders had a meeting with Mayor Dan Plato last week and were informed that a court order was granted. This information unsettled the community and planned a peaceful protest for today. On Tuesday, 17 September 2019 a group of 50 people blocked the entrance to Hangberg and barricaded the road again with planks and other material. The area is being monitored by POPS. No arrests have been made. No injuries were reported,” said the Hout Bay Community Policing Forum in a statement.
