City of Cape Town officials are out in full force as thousands flock to the City’s popular beaches. They have deployed over 800 officers at some beach spots. Lifeguards have also been beefed up to deal with the influx of beachgoers. At Sea Point public pool, over 4000 people stood in queues to get a spot yesterday morning.
In December, the city announced that only 13 out of the City’s 35 public swimming pool will be open over the festive season. The Sea Point swimming pool only uses seawater and is open daily from 7am to 7pm.
At some beaches, precautions have also been taken to ensure the safety of children. The Strand Neighbourhood Watch ran the City’s “Child Tagging” Programme.
The police in the Western Cape have also increased their deployment to beaches in anticipation of the high levels of visitors. Roadblocks, vehicle checkpoints, and stop searches are expected to be conducted.
