At first glance, Andrew Baxter’s photographs of flowers in the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens can be mistaken for a brilliant pyrotechnics display.
Unlike most photographers who frequent the gardens to take pictures in the soft early morning light, Baxter bides his time and waits for dusk, as this is when the “magic happens”.
In the photographs, the flowers appear to have luminescent glow in the darkness, a phenomenon that Baxter explained in a Facebook post.
“Low-light conditions enhance the kaleidoscope of colours juxtaposed against dark shadows,” he said.
Baxter posted the series of photographs, titled Floristic Fireworks, to his Facebook page on November 13 and they received a remarkable response. The first was so popular — it “went viral all the way to Russia and far beyond”, said Baxter — that he treated his followers to a second series nearly two weeks later.
