Mama Cucina, an Italian Restaurant in Riebeek Kasteel, has made the unfortunate announcement that they will be permanently closing their doors as a result of coronavirus.

The effects of COVID-19 have been harsh on businesses everywhere. Many have had to vigorously change their operating procedures to remain afloat and compliant with health and safety regulations.

On March 25, on the dawn of the nationwide lockdown, Mama Cucina announced that, like all other restaurants, their doors would be closed until further notice. “When all goes well and we are coming out stronger on the other side we will see each other on the 17th of April,” they said.

Since then, the lockdown has taken it’s toll, as it has gone on for much longer than many initially expected, and restaurants have only recently been allowed to reopen for trade under very specific regulations.

Yesterday [June 9], the restaurant officially notified their customers that they would no longer be operating.

“Today it is probably one of the worst days of our lives that we as owners of Mama Cucina have to announce that our restaurant had to close our doors permanently due to this world wide pandemic,” they said in a Facebook post.

“From the bottom of our hearts we wish to thank everyone that made us not just a successful restaurant, but an institution of note!” they added. “To our precious manager and staff, this could not have been possible without your ongoing contribution and effort. Words ain’t enough.”

Loyal patrons of the establishment, of course, were disheartened at the news but thank the restaurant for many years of great food and service, and wished them well for the future.

“Devastating news!! So sorry to hear of the loss of this precious gem of a restaurant. We spent many special occasions there and feel for you – what a loss to not only you, but to all of us,” said one Facebook user.

“I am SO sorry! Was one of my favourite spots to eat. Will be missing you. I trust new doors will open for you all,” said another.

The eatery is sad to have to go, but it seems that they are hopeful for a future with more delicious Italian food. “Teary eyed and all we will hopefully see the other side of this. Stay healthy and stay safe. Grazie mille. Goodbye but not farewell,” they said.

Cape Town Etc reached out to Mama Cucina for additional comment, however they did not respond at the time of publication.
