Spend enough time on South Africa’s roads, and you’re bound to see something crazy. A Lowveld man was seen clinging to the bonnet of his girlfriend’s car for dear life while she sped along the R40 for nine kilometres on the morning of Friday, October 4. It is alleged that the two were involved in a domestic dispute.
Speaking to The Lowvelder, Selly Nkambule said that his partner Happiness Mokone was meant to meet him at the Mbombela District Court on a domestic matter he had reportedly initiated.
“This is not the first time that she avoided the matter,” he said. But this time, when she drove off at the courthouse without going inside, and with their five-year-old child in her car, he wanted to follow her in his own car. “The next minute she drove forward, hit my lower legs with the car and I grabbed onto the bonnet.”
According to Nkambule, Mokone did not stop despite shouting from other drivers at the fuel station. Instead she turned onto the R40 heading into Mbombela.
“Happiness just sped up, and I was shouting at her to ‘stop, stop’ and banging on the window,” he said.
A motorist who was making his way in the opposite direction said he could not believe his eyes when he saw the car driving towards him.
“I made a U-turn and followed the car, trying to block the driver off,” Adriaan Smuts said.
Smuts was very concerned, not only for Nkambule, but because there was a child in the car.
Nkambule said that he has not yet opened a case against Mokone.
