A 46-year-old man was shot in the head in Atlantic Skipper Road, Hangberg in Hout Bay on Wednesday morning [February 10] after dropping his daughter off at school. According to provincial police spokesperson, Captain FC Van Wyk, the man later died from his injury.
The incident occurred near the Sentinel Primary School in Hangberg. The man is reportedly a parent of a learner at the Hangberg Pre-primary.
“Hout Bay police attended to a complaint of a shooting in progress near a primary school, and on arrival found the victim lying on the pavement with a wound to his forehead. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died due to the injury sustained,” said Van Wyk.
The suspects are still at large.
The man’s identity has not been confirmed, although News24 reports he is believed to have links to the underworld. Unconfirmed reports have identified him as Simon Mather.
In a statement, ward councillor Roberto Quintas condemned the actions and confirmed that trauma counselling is already being provided to learners and staff at both Hangberg Pre-Primary and Sentinel Primary School.
“The parent of a learner at the Hangberg Pre-primary was fatally injured in a drive-by shooting outside of the school gates and in front of learners, staff and parents this morning during the school drop off time,” he said.
“I condemn in the strongest possible terms any type of violence, and most of all, public violence that will contribute to the fear and trauma experienced by children and adults in our society.”
