A local man has launched a petition to convince President Cyril Ramaphosa to sell the Northern Cape to Namibia in an effort to pay back Eskom’s debt and lessen the pressure on taxpayers.
Aidan Van Niekerk’s petition is to sell off the Northern Cape to Namibia for R420-million, and Niekerk is urging South Africans to sign it.
Currently, the petition has received roughly 1 848 signatures and the number is climbing daily with the target number being 2 500.
“Eskom has too much debt, taxpayers are tired of paying. Nobody lives in the Northern Cape. I don’t know, tell the Namibians it has a desert and a big hole or something,” he said.
Those who have seen the petition took to Twitter to share their thoughts. Some residents of the Northern Cape even proposed that the government make the province an independent country in tweets.
