On Woman’s Day, it only seems fitting that we celebrate everyday heroes. Lead SA, which celebrates locals who uplift their community, asks the public to nominate South Africans to receive their monthly Western Cape Heroes awards. These ‘heroes’ are nominated through the organisation’s sister sites Cape Talk and KFM. This month’s winners are eight-year-old Cadi de Jager and Emile Jansen.
Cadi, who was selected as the youth hero, helped raise money for the Red Cross Children’s Hospital as a thank you for the treatment she received there. A few years ago, the young ambassador for the Children’s Hospital Trust was diagnosed with Rathke’s Cleft cyst and spent time at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital. Sharing her story has helped raise money for the organisation who helped fund her treatment.
Emile was selected as the hero in the over-21 category for his dedication towards the youth, particularly those from the Cape Flats. Since 1998, he has strived for positive change through his Heal the Hood project that aims to provide holistic youth activities and addressing issues facing the community.
Each hero received R250 000 from Dischem to donate towards their charity of choice. This Women’s Day, while you’re celebrating all the worthy women in your life, think about all the amazing women making a difference in their community and nominate them to be your everyday hero at Lead SA.
