Alan Winde was instated as the new Premier of the Western Cape, taking over the role from Helen Zille.
Winde, who is a member of the Democratic Alliance (DA), received 24 votes while Cameron Dugmore of the African National Congress (ANC) followed closely behind with 10 votes. Six other votes were disregarded as they were spoiled.
Winde had previously filled the roles of Western Cape MEC for Community Safety, MEC for Economic Opportunities, as well as MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism.
Born in Knysna, he attended Knysna High School before going on to become a businessman and entrepreneur. Thereafter, he became a municipal director and district councillor.
He was selected as the Western Cape Premier candidate for the DA in September 2018, and went on to become the second Premier from the DA when he succeeded Helen Zille.
During his address yesterday, Winde said that he would shift his focus to the economy and jobs. He also swore to fix the province’s public transport system, as well as ensuring the Cape’s overall safety.
“This is a day we have worked long and hard for, and I would like to say thank you to every single voter, and to the DA, for the confidence and trust they have placed in me to lead the provincial government for the next five years,” he said.
