The presidency announced a cabinet reshuffle today and South Africa waited patiently to see who would keep their jobs and who would face the axe.
The most important appointments were Mpumalanga Premier, David Mabuza, who is the new Deputy President and Nhlanhla Nene, the new Minister of Finance – they will be sworn in tomorrow.
President Cyril Ramaphosa apologized for the delay in the announcements and thanked the outgoing ministers in his address at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Monday night.
The new appointments include:
Nene was appointed as the new Minister of Finance during the reshuffle. He was previously appointed as the Minister of Finance of South Africa on 25 May 2014 and removed from the position by President Jacob Zuma on 9 December 2015.
He was also the first black South African to hold the position of Finance Minister.
Who is David Mabuza?
– He is from Mpumalanga, studied at the University of South Africa and holds certificates in the Bachelor of Arts and Education
– His career in politics kicked off with the the Azanian Students Organisation (AZASO) where he was the secretary
– He was also the chairman of South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU)
– In 1994 he became the MEC for Education in Mpumalanga and then later regional chairman of the ANC
– Other stints include Deputy Chairperson of the ANC Mpumalanga Province, MEC for Road and Transport, chairperson of the ANC Mpumalanga and MEC for Agriculture and Land Administration and now the Premier of Mpumalanga.
