Cape Town’s CBD has the largest number of, and the most variety of, crimes in the city and some of the highest in the Western Cape, with over 34 100 different categories of reported crime identified.
The latest regional report on crime statistics by the South African Police Service (SAPS) was reworked by Crimestatssa.com to produce a clickable map showing the different categories of crimes throughout South Africa’s provinces and suburbs. The report reveals crime statistics going from 2009 to 2018.
Areas on the map are graded in terms of the percentage of crimes that occur in them, with precincts with the lowest percentages – 0 to 20% – marked green and those with the highest – 80 to 100% – marked red.
The most common crimes in the CBD include those in categories such as community-reported serious crimes, theft from a motor vehicle, drug-related crimes, burglary at a residence, common assault, common robbery, and malicious damage to property.
Closely competing with the CBD in terms of crime category numbers are Mitchells Plain (28 676), Kraaifontein (20 919) and Nyanga (20 757).
These shockingly high figures stand in stark contrast to those of some other parts of Cape Town, such as Simon’s Town (1 455), Camps Bay (1 757) and Mowbray( 2 564).
Overall, the map reveals the ten provinces and suburbs with the overall highest numbers of crimes reported, with the Cape CBD at the very top.
Other lists produced from the statistics include Worst ten areas for murder, sexual offence, attempted murder, and assault.
The Western Cape’s most-featured list is the Top ten worst drug-related precincts, where all ten went to Cape areas.
