Since the start of December, an official 337 arrests were made by the City’s enforcement agencies for individuals driving under the influence.
The City’s Executive Director for Safety and Security, Richard Bosman explains that both the City’s Metro Police Department and Cape Town Traffic Services have been working hard to ensure the safety of all drivers in the Western Cape.
“The City’s Metro Police Department has arrested 77 motorists, while Cape Town Traffic Services has made 260 arrests for drunk driving at various road blocks,” he said.
The recorded 337 arrests excludes those made during the course of normal operations, outside of road block areas.
Over the weekend of the 21 December to 23 December, police officials arrested 95 drunk driving culprits, with one of them colliding with a heavy duty articulated truck.
In 2017, the City’s enforcement agencies arrested a recorded 307 individuals with 211 driving under the influence (DUI) arrests made at road blocks and the Metro Police Department arresting 96 individuals.
There has been a 10% increase in arrests since last year.
Motorists are urged to not drink and drive, ensuring the safety of themselves, their loved ones and other drivers.
Road accidents have spiked during the festive season with a total of 767 recorded fatalities being reported earlier this month.
