Nearly R1.5 million has been raised for well-known doctor and life coach Sindi van Zyl after South Africans rallied together to help pay for her medical bills.

Dr Van Zyl has been fighting for her life for weeks in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to COVID-19.

IOL reported on Tuesday that South Africans had opened up their hearts and wallets and raised around R1.5 million.

This was after her husband, Marinus van Zyl, took to social media last week and made an impassioned plea for assistance over the payment of her medical bills.

“The cost to the family alone has already exceeded R1 million, and we are running out of funds.

“She has suffered several complications related to a long stay in ICU, and we need more funds to pay for her continued stay in hospital until her lungs can cope without the ventilator,” Marinus said in his plea.

EWN reported earlier that the cost of being in ICU alone was up to R200 000 a week, with R1.5 million already being paid to cover other costs.
