The development of Wescape, a new city located on the outskirts of the Cape Town CBD, is finally in place and plans are now being actioned. Development is said to start in three years and the city aims for Wescape to be a major economic development project that will create 300 000 jobs in the province, as stated on BusinessTech.

Wescape is an integrated and holistic development based on the communiTgrow approach to the urban environment which will enable people to learn, live and grow in a healthy, self-sustaining community. Wescape will consist of 200 000 homes and will provide all necessary educational and healthcare facilities, employment opportunities, and community facilities and services. Wescape is the flagship project of communiTgrow.

With the increased growth of population within Cape Town, it is difficult to keep up with housing, service and infrastructure demands. There is very little development opportunity within the CBD for the city to expand, so the West Coast Growth Corridor along the urban edge has been identified as a targeted development area, thus the perfect location for the Wescape development.

Wescape

Wescape will comprise of life-long learning with healthcare, employment opportunities and social sustenance. The Wescape community development model incorporates industry, technology, food security, infrastructure, waste processing, energy reduction and production with a focus on minimising environmental harm.

The project will be rolled out in phases in order to incorporate the community during all levels as well as infrastructure and transport needs.

According to BusinessTech, no set budget has been confirmed upon, but reports in 2014 put the costing at R140 billion. Construction is aiming to commence in 2019/2020, if not earlier.

Check out the concept video for Wescape, do you think Cape Town needs a new city?

Is that the development within the nuclear fallout zone? I would like to see a joint evacuation exercise with existing developments in the area first.

Looks terrible ! Come on . Employ good architects. A bit of green on the roofs, water and bridges don’t make communities . Oh let’s paint the wall a few different colours too.

I agree with Erik. We have a responsibility towards future generations to improve our urban environment, not litter it with sub-par buildings.

Nice idea… but as Erik said…
But, but…. what about our poorer areas? These need to be uplifted. The poor need better as well.

If it is century city then I’m guessing more overly priced accommodation and shops for the elite.
Money could be better used to build middle to low income suburb. Uplift the poorer communities instead of lifting the elite further.
That is……… if that’s what this new development is aiming at……..

Yes.. This really benefits society.. How about tackling homelessness , there are so many children living on our streets!! We need hospitals , mobile clinics, schools, recreational centers for the youth ! The list goes on..
