From Saturday 1 July 2017, a new electricity tariff will take effect for Capetonians who own properties worth more than R1 million.
The new home user tariff will be R250 a month, or R8.21 per day, and will apply to consumers still using the old credit meters. The new charge will cover the cost of maintaining the service, which was previously built into the electricity unit price. Additionally, homes valued at more than R400 000 will be losing their free basic water supply from this date as well.
Mayoral committee member for utilities, Xanthea Limberg, says households who use more than 600 units of electricity per month would not notice the difference in their bills, however, the move has caused uproar amongst Cape Town residents.
