New Zealand has updated their skills and job shortage list along with their Global Impact Visa (GIV – aimed at only 400 individuals per year). With the prospect of being able to work abroad a tempting option for many, the New Zealand government has listed the immediate and long term job opportunities for South Africans with a new online tool.
Pew Research, an American fact tank, found that 60 000 people who were born in South Africa were living in New Zealand in 2017. The study also found that popular migration areas for locals are the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States of America.
The online tools allows job seekers to find out if their profession is in demand – whether it falls under Long term skills shortage list or the Immediate skills shortage list.
Long Term Skill Shortage List (LTSSL) are highly skilled positions which have an ongoing and sustained shortage both globally and in New Zealand.
This category enables successful applicants to be given a work to residence visa. In order to apply for residence you must sustain the position for more than two years and have a salary above NZ$45,000.

Immediate Skill Shortage List (ISSL) includes opportunities where people are required immediately and there are no New Zealand citizens that are able to fill these positions which accelerates the application process.
If granted the position, candidates would be granted an Essential work visa which permits temporary work in the country. Candidates on this visa cannot apply for a residence permit.
