A man and a woman, who died in a Mitchells Plain fire on Wednesday this week, had just been married when the incident happened, a report says.

According to IOL, the couple, Hugh Lindoor, 34, and Monique Majampa, 29 had only been married for two weeks.

Reports indicated that the fire also destroyed two homes and a car.

News24 said it remained unclear what caused the fire.

City of Cape Town firefighters were summoned to the blaze in Sandury Road at 00:26 on Wednesday.

“When firefighters arrived, they found informal structures on fire but managed to contain and extinguish the blaze by 01.42,” Fire and Rescue Service Department spokesperson Jermaine Carelse was quoted as saying.

“The bodies of the man and woman were found in one of the structures. Fire Service medics declared them deceased and the scene was handed over to the South African Police Service,” Carelse said.

Lindoor’s mother, Johanna Adams said the couple was still waiting for the marriage certificate to arrive from Home Affairs.

“We are extremely distraught, but our main concern is finding out what the cause of the fire was, as there were no cables, candles or electrical points in that area,” said Adams.

Police investigations were still under way.
