This past Sunday morning, the National Sea Rescue Institute attempted to rescue a juvenile humpback whale, which was beached on  Sandy Bay near Llandudno.

According to Times Live, the whale was still breathing and blinking late on Sunday, however, officials from the Department of Environmental Affairs reported that even if authorities managed to get the whale back into the water, it was unlikely to survive. The whale’s organs would have been damaged by compression as its enormous weight was not offset by its buoyancy in water. The decision was made to euthanise the whale by detonating explosives on its head.

The SABC News Western Cape Facebook page shared pictures when the whale was found and when the decision to euthanise was made.
