Many have been speculating that South Africa may be going back into another hard lockdown amid the rising number of COVID-19 infections across the country. The African National Congress’ (ANC) National Executive Committee (NEC) has reassured citizens that the country will not revert to a hard lockdown as the economy is still recovering from the financial devastation of Level 5.

As reported by News24, ANC Head of Organising Nomvula Mokonyane confirmed this during a media briefing after the NEC held its first meeting for 2021.

“What was raised is that all have to give the necessary support creating an environment that will not lead to a total shutdown of the economy,” she said. “Meaning that we can’t drive the country to a total shutdown, unless otherwise, we have created alternatives – alternatives to what currently exist.”

According to Mokonyane, government would have to identify which parts of the economy contribute to high COVID-19 exposure.

On Wednesday [January 6], the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) held an urgent meeting as the country’s coronavirus numbers passed the 20 000 mark. A total of 844 deaths were recorded on Wednesday, bringing the country’s total number of deaths to 31 368.
