It’s been a very eventful weekend in the Western Cape and the country. Here’s a summary of what happened at the weekend.

Petrol Price Decrease:
Motorists can expect a slight decrease in the price of fuel in the new year. News reports have been circulating that there will be a slight decrease according to the Automobile Association. Motorists can expect a decrease of 10c a litre. Diesel and illuminating paraffin will lower by 6c.

#ANC54:
Its D day at the ANC’s 54th elective conference today. The announcement of who the president and deputy president is expected to take place at midday. As expected, the two candidates running for president is Cyril Ramaphosa and Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma. 

Fire’s raging:
Firefighters and emergency services had a busy day containing a wild fire which broke out on Lion’s Head in Cape Town on Saturday. The fire started at 2pm on the 670-metre tall mountain. Emergency services and firefighters were on site fighting the flames.  Around 24 firefighters and 3 helicopters were dispatched to the scene. Another fire broke out in Tokai over the weekend. Emergency services remain on the scene to try and contain the fire today.

D Day For DeLille:
The day has arrived for mayor Patricia De Lille to explain why she should not step down from her position. De Lille is on the verge of losing her job as the the Democratic Alliance is preparing to usher in new leadership. Last week it was reported that De Lille had until Monday to explain why she should still remain in power. This comes after allegations of maladministration surfaced. However, De Lille is set to turn to the court to stop her party from removing her.

City beefs up lifeguards on popular beaches:
The City Of Cape Town announced that they have increased the number of life guards on its beaches, ahead of the festive season, to keep beach-goers safe.  With more than 2-million people expected to enjoy the city’s beautiful summer season, the City has urged the public to stay safe. Last week two drowning incidents occurred at Mnandi Beach and False Bay Coast when two young girls drowned. Normally the City has more than 270 trained life guards and 1 500 volunteer life guards on duty. This year the Recreation and Parks department has a pool of additional lifeguards for deployment as needed.
