A 44-year-old woman from Nyanga was arrested on Sunday, October 4 on charges of rape and human trafficking and appeared in Wynberg Magistrate Court on Tuesday, October 6.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the woman sold her daughter for sexual exploitation.

“The woman received payment from a man to have intercourse with her 13 year old daughter during July in Nyanga. The case was opened after the victim shared the ordeal with her friend this month,” Captain FC Van Wyk said in a statement.

The suspect was arrested but police are still searching for the man.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila explains the mother appeared in court on Tuesday and was charged with human trafficking for sexual exploitation and rape. More charges are likely to be added at a later stage.

The case has been postponed to October 29 for the bail application.
