The country has reported a total of 26 485 new Covid-19 cases, and 175 deaths on Saturday, July 3. According to the Health Department, this brings the total number of cases in South Africa to 2 046 311.
On Saturday, 12 289 people were vaccinated. The total number of vaccines administered was 3 305 95, the department said.
Meanwhile, undertakers around the Western Cape are concerned that coffins might run out of stock as the burials increase. As IOL reports, undertakers are now conducting over 90 Covid-19-related funerals per week as the third wave sweeps through the country.
The co-ordinator of the Undertakers United Front in the Western Cape, Pastor Kenny Mc Dillon has said that, “During the second wave, we had a shortage of coffins and now we are advising our suppliers that we get in more stock because if we look at the situation in Gauteng.”
The Chinese embassy in Pretoria has also welcomed the approval of the use of China’s Sinovac vaccine in South Africa in light of the country trying to fight the pandemic, as per IOL.
In a statement, the Embassy said: “The embassy of China in South Africa welcomes this important development in China-South Africa cooperation on Covid-19 vaccines.
“The world is now still suffering greatly from Covid-19 and South Africa is facing the impact of a third wave of infections. The Chinese embassy in South Africa will actively follow through on the political commitment of President Xi Jinping on making Chinese Covid-19 vaccines a global public good.”
