Fill up your tanks before tomorrow – the Department of Energy announced yesterday that a petrol price increase of 71c per liter will be in effect from tomorrow, Wednesday 6 December 2017.

The department said in a statement that, in line with the application of the Regulatory Accounts System, the minister has approved these net increases. This is the fifth month in a row where the price of petrol has increased.

The main reason given for this increase was the rand’s depreciation against the dollar. However, the increase of crude oil prices is an additional factor. Diesel will increase by 60 cents a litre, while at retail outlets, illuminating paraffin will cost 98 cents more.

For a light vehicle with a tank capacity of 55 liters, that’s roughly an additional R39 per fill-up.  Midnight is when the increase takes effect.
