A case of assault has reportedly been opened after an angry suspect accused of assault smacked an attorney in a Cape Town court.

According to Times Live, the attorney, Mari Rencken, 47, had no connection to the suspect’s case at the Wynberg Magistrate’s court.

Rencken was assaulted while waiting for her own client’s matter to be heard on Thursday, May 20.

She was sitting next to the accused box because she needed to say something to the prosecutor.

“I had a matter that stood down to do mediation and had to go back to court and tell the prosecutor what happened,” News24 quoted Rencken as saying.

As she waited for her matter to be called, the court was still dealing with the accused who allegedly accosted her.

After hearing the magistrate’s decision to postpone his case, the accused became visibly upset.

“The guy was just getting agitated because he would not stop talking. The interpreter told him to calm.

“When he walked out of the box, I was sitting in front of him, and he just smacked me, and my head hit the wall, and I fell off the chair,” she said.

Police confirmed that the matter was being investigated.
