Firework displays have been a traditional part of New Year’s Eve celebrations in Cape Town and across the globe. Over the years, however, these elaborate shows have dwindled in popularity as the harsh impact on animals and the environment have made them somewhat unjustifiable.
In the interest of fire safety and welfare of animals and pets, Plettenberg Bay will no longer have a fireworks display, but rather a laser light show to ring in the new year.
The laser light display will take place between 11.45pm and midnight on New Year’s Eve, and can be seen on Central Beach.
“Visitors and residents are advised that it is illegal to discharge fireworks in Plettenberg Bay at any time and we have been advised that there will be no public display of fireworks by the municipality or any other organisation on New Year’s Eve 2019/2020,” said Grand Africa’s Janine Kruger. “We are also very set on being as environmentally friendly as possible and that is where the idea for a laser show was born.”
