Authorities are desperately searching for an eight-year-old girl who slipped into an Athlone canal on Thursday morning [July 9], along with the man who attempted to rescue her.
According to Radio 786, the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services responded to the scene, along with divers. There are now various searches underway at different parts of the canal in the Vygieskraal informal settlement.
The little girl was believed to have been playing with her friends on the banks of the canal when she slipped and fell in. She reportedly was drifting when a man who saw the incident unfold jumped in to rescue her.
In a separate incident, Kuils River police are searching for missing Jeandre Odendaal (18).
He was last seen after he discharged himself from the Laingsburg hospital, July 1. Odendaal was last seen wearing a grey tracksuit, grey hoodie, grey mask, and dark green takkies. He has a tattoo on his right hand, and a scar on the back of his left hand.
