Scenes of mayhem are emerging this morning from the suburb of Strandfontein.
Protesters, reportedly from the nearby informal settlement of Phumlani Village, set tyres, road signs and traffic lights ablaze, with rubble strewn over the major incoming and outgoing Strandfontein routes. Bricks were thrown at cars earlier this morning, with GoodHopeFM reporting that gangsters entered the fray too, hiding in bushes and robbing passers-by. Schools in the area have been closed for the day.
SAPS have been deployed to the scene and are monitoring the situation. The reason for the protest is unclear.
