With summer approaching and more relaxed lockdown restrictions, more people are likely to take a trip to the beach and so are seals, according to Helderberg Wildlife Rescue.
“As summer is coming closer to be out of quarantine, seals are bound to come and sit on the beaches. Seals are land mammals that hunt in the ocean, and spend hours on dry land,” said the non-profit organisation in a Facebook post.
The organisation urged the public to steer clear of any seals they encounter on the beach and to give them space to rest.
“Do not try to feed them, do not try to wet them and do not try to chase them back into the ocean,” they added. “Needless to say, do not try to touch them or approach them or take selfies.”
This is an important warning because wild seals may scratch or bite if they are approached.
“They have huge K9 teeth that can cause major damage, and the bacteria in their mouths can cause severe gangrene,” concluded the post.
In the event of a seal sighting, Helderberg Wildlife Rescue encourages the public to call them at 0745600711.
