The safety of school children has once again come under the spotlight after a Livingstone High School pupil was attacked by a group of men outside the school grounds on Thursday, June 17. It is alleged that the group of men were trying to rob the learner of her cellphone.
As reported by News 24, spokesperson for the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) Kerry Mauchline confirmed the incident, indicating the safety of learners outside the school gates is beyond the school’s control, however, learners should always remain vigilant and practice safety measures.
According to Mauchline, learners who are picked up at their respective schools by parents or transport should remain within the school property until their transport has arrived.
Meanwhile, the school has now requested police to do visible patrols during dismissal times. The Claremont SAPS and Social Crime Prevention Unit had visited the school after the incident.
A case is yet to be opened following the incident.
