Following the burning of a total of 18 train carriages on November 28, the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) is offering a R100 000 reward for any information that could lead to the arrest of four suspects.
Prasa said in a statement on Sunday that security cameras were able to capture the four suspects in the act that caused an estimated R61-million in damages.
Investigations into the CCTV footage are currently underway, and the rail agency is appealing to all law enforcement agencies, the general public and commuters to help in identifying the suspects.
“An analysis of vandalism patterns leave little doubt that criminals are deliberately setting out to cause mayhem and delays. Investigations and intelligence point to orchestrated sabotage within the Western Cape rail network, causing millions of rands in damage since the start of the sporadic spate of fires in 2015,” said Prasa in a statement.
These attacks have been identified as economic sabotage causing taxpayers to have to fund the replacement of infrastructure on a regular basis and greatly affecting commuters.
The number of attacks has reached an unimaginable level with over 140 carriages and 40 train sets being burnt within the last three years, with no one being prosecuted for these crimes yet.
