South African Police Service (SAPS) officers have been deployed to the Heinz Park area near Mitchells Plain following unrest today [April 22].

According to Wayne Dyason, City of Cape Town Law Enforcement spokesperson, the unrest is due to protest. It is believed residents of the area were attempting to loot a truck.

“Protestors fled into Heinz Park and New Woodlands,” Dyason said.

The R300 is now closed, as well as Baden Powell Drive. Vehicles are being stoned along these roads.

“Live rounds were also fired at officers,” said Dyason.

Residents are warned to steer clear of these areas until the issues are resolved.
