The world-famous FIA World Rallycross Championship recently touched down in Riga for the penultimate round of the 2019 competition, and its final battle will play out at the Killarney International Raceway in Cape Town this weekend.
This highly-anticipated finalé will thrill audiences as supercars will accelerate faster than Formula 1s. Previous championships have titillated audiences with airborne jumps and tight corners, and this year promises to deliver the same adrenaline-pumping show as the drivers compete for the car crown.
The world final is brought to Killarney by IMG in conjunction with the City of Cape Town and WorldSport. An agreement with the City has also ensured that the championship final will also be hosted at Killarney for 2020 and 2021.
“Cape Town has long been an event hub for exciting, adrenalin sports like motor racing, with a recent display of a Formula 1 car’s acceleration in our streets. The City of Cape Town is proud to once again host the World Rallycross Championship at Killarney. The drivers and their lightning fast cars will experience not only fierce competition, but everything Cape Town and its people have to offer – from the backdrop of Table Mountain, one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature, our beaches, vineyards, culture and entertainment,” Cape Town’s Executive Mayor, Dan Plato said.
Monster Energy RX Cartel driver Andreas Bakkerud entered the championship with a strong two-point lead over rival Timmy Hansen. Following an action-packed two-days of racing, in which the Norwegian took the top qualifier spot, a semi-final win, as well as a third-place podium, Bakkerud has a single point separating him from his Swedish rival.
“One thing is for sure though – we are going to be ready for a fight in South Africa… bring it on!” Bakkerud said.
