President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the changes to his Cabinet on Thursday, November 22.
The president revealed that the Department of Communications and Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services will become a single ministry, which will be headed by Stella Ndabeni Abrahams.
He also announced that former Minister of Telecommunications Siyabonga Cwele will become the Minister of Home Affairs, since the previous minister, Malusi Gigaba, resigned recently. Furthermore, Ramaphosa stated that Nomvula Nokoyane will be the new minister of Environmental Affairs.
The Cabinet reshuffle comes after Gigagba’s resignation, as well as the untimely passing of Edna Molewa, who had acted as the Environmental Affairs minister.
Thursday’s reshuffle sets the tone for how Ramaphosa will restructure his Cabinet in future, as he seeks to launch a larger review of government after the 2019 elections.
As reported by BusinessTech, a government source told Bloomberg that Ramaphosa aims to create a super-ministry that forms part of a major overhaul of South Africa’s executive.
