Residents in Mossel Bay were shocked to see a super-large vessel travelling through their waters yesterday [May 13].

The ship is from a shipping company called Boskalis and the unusually large load that it is carrying is actually a fish farm.

The vessel, known as the BOKA Vanguard, is transporting the farm from China to Norway and is excepted to arrive in mid-June.

The cargo aboard has a width of 60 metres and a length of 385 metres, weighing in at 36 000 tonnes, making it the largest cargo ever transported via vessel.

“I can confirm that the Boskalis vessel which passed Mossel Bay is the semi-submersible heavy transport vessel, BOKA Vanguard,” Spokesperson Arno Schikker told Mossel Bay advertiser.

Loading was successfully completed off the coast of the Chinese city of Yantai.
