Ivan Ivanov (43), a tourist from Ukraine, was stabbed to death on the Chapman’s Peak hiking trail over the weekend. Ivanov was said to have been planning to bring his family down to Cape Town because he loved the city so much just before the time of his death.

Ivanov had visited the country three times previously, and wanted to hike Chapman’s Peak alone despite being warned not to do so. He had barely made it 10 metres from the parking lot when he was robbed and stabbed to death.

More than 40 first responders, community members and security personnel gathered to pay their respects to Ivanov at Chapman’s Peak on Sunday. He worked as a company detective for Bureau Veritas, which tests, inspects and certifies products for companies across the globe.

Ivanov leaves behind his three children, Gleb (20), Taisia (12) and Makar (3).

Speaking to IOL, Ivanov’s son Gleb praised the swift response of the Hout Bay Community Policing Forum. He also said that he would not visit South Africa after his father’s death.

Jarred Scholtz, a member of the Hout Bay Community Crime prevention (CCP), said of the tragedy, “It was very emotional to see that the victim had passed. I feel terrible for what his family is going though and wish there was more we could do to help. I hope that today will send a strong message to those with I’ll intent that we will do whatever we can to prevent these horrible crimes from happening and ensure that offenders are caught.”
According to Scholtz, he was the first person to find Ivanov’s body.
