There has been a string of opportunistic muggings in Muizenberg recently, in which assailants have used violent means to rob their victims of handbags and other personal belongings.

A City of Cape Town law enforcement spokesperson, Wayne Dyason revealed that an third incident took place on the St James walkway this morning.

“Following up on yesterday’s arrest of three muggers, [law enforcement officers] arrested another suspect who attempted to rob a female on the Muizenberg-St James walkway at 6.40am this morning.”

An auxiliary officer on a bicycle patrol in the area was alerted to the incident and pursued the suspect, who was attempting to flee.

Dyason has confirmed that the suspect was apprehended.

“The suspect was caught on Muizenberg Station before he could board a train. He was taken to Muizenberg SAPS and charged with attempted robbery and possession of a dangerous weapon.”

This incident follows shocking CCTV footage of a woman being robbed in broad daylight in Muizenberg on Saturday morning that was released on social media.

There has been no update on the incident or confirmation of an arrest.

“No arrests for this incident yet that we are aware of.”

Dyason reveals that in a separate incident on Wednesday, three male suspects, aged 18, 16 and 14 years old, allegedly attempted to rob people on Sunrise Beach in Muizenberg and were arrested.

“An alert member of the public reported the incident and officers after a lengthy foot chase in the dunes at Sunrise Beach managed to apprehend the three suspects.”

A knife one of the suspects was reportedly carrying was recovered by law enforcement. Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the three suspects already had existing warrants for their arrests.

“They were taken to Muizenberg SAPS where it was discovered that warrants for their arrest had also previously been issued for other cases. SAPS will investigate further to establish if the suspects are connected to other beach robberies in the area.”
