One of the city’s favourite burger joints, Royale Eatery, which was forced to close its doors earlier this year because of government restrictions implemented to curb the spread of COVID-19, has reopened.

The restaurant was one of many institutions, including the oldest pub in the country, that succumbed to the financial pressure brought about when the lockdown came into effect in March.

Royale Eatery, now under different management, operates from a new location – Claremont in the southern suburbs – but retained all the staff from their Long Street location where it was situated since 2003.

“Like a phoenix, we’ve risen from the ashes by learning to come back as a better version of ourselves,” said the restaurant’s team. They vowed to keep their foundation by offering the same recipes but with a fresh perspective.

In Long Street, the restaurant became famous for its gourmet burgers, fries and double-thick milkshakes. Its burgers, in particular, have attained a hallowed status with many diners describing it as the ‘best burger [they] have ever eaten’.

Sandiswe Ncube, wrote an Eat Out review in 2018 that described himself as a ‘faithful Royale “Eater”‘ for more than seven years. He remarked: “The taste, succulence and decadence of the burgers has remained consistent…  This is one of my favourite places in town and I will continue to visit it on a regular basis.”

The restaurant offers more than 50 variations of classic and gourmet burgers and has a selection of beef, chicken, fish, vegetarian and vegan options to pair with their decadent milkshakes.

Royale Eatery is now situated at 20 Vineyard Road, Claremont.
