South Africa’s total number of coronavirus cases have officially exceeded the half a million mark. The country is the most heavily affected by the virus on the continent.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced on Saturday, August 1 that South Africa’s total cases had reached 503 290, with 8 153 deaths recorded. As of Sunday, August 2, 511 485 total cases have been confirmed with cumulative deaths at 8 366.

Despite cases in the process of stabilising in the Western Cape, South Africa is still in fifth place for total COVID-19 cases worldwide. The country falls just behind the US, Brazil, India and Russia.

In recent weeks, Gauteng has become the epicentre of the virus. The rate of infection is increasing substantially, with a large number of cases focused around Pretoria.

Predictions say it will be at least another month before South Africans can expect a peak in cases and residents are urged to continue to take the virus seriously.

South Africa has managed to achieve a 68% recovery rate but experts say this may be slanted by the number of tests done in the country.

Since the start of the pandemic, SA has faced a number of challenges. Corruption, closing down of small businesses, job loss and the inability to social distance in some areas, are just some of the things South Africans have had to live with.

As the country continues to impose the lockdown alert Level 3, which includes a cigarette and alcohol ban, many South Africans are wondering what the future holds.
