In a historic moment for South Africa and a move to demonstrate government dedication to transparency, President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for all COVID-19 government expenditure to be published.
The total government expenditure history during COVID-19 has been shared for all to see on the National Treasury website, according to a statement by Ramaphosa made on Wednesday, August 26.
The list details all the financial information pertaining to all provinces, national departments and more than 70 public entities involved.
The move follows Ramaphosa’s previous directive issued on August 5 requesting all departments to submit full information on COVID-19 tenders to the inter-ministerial commission, headed by Justice and Correctional services Minister Ronald Lamola.
“This measure is unprecedented and a clear demonstration of government’s commitment to transparency and accountability when it comes to allegations of corruption in the Covid-19 procurement process,” said Ramaphosa in a statement.
“By publishing these lists we have honoured our promise to the South African people. They enable proper scrutiny of the details of all companies who have received tenders for COVID-19 related services.”
Information published on the National Treasury website will also be regulated to ensure it is up to date.
