As the country eases its way into lockdown level two, the South African Medical Association (Sama) wants the government to enforce stricter lockdown regulations.
According to Sama, members of the public are not adhering to COVID-19 health protocols amid the third wave of the coronavirus in parts of the country. The new adjusted regulations mean that restaurants and bars must close by 10 pm, with the curfew starting at 11 pm and ending at 4 am.
The association said it has already become difficult to get a bed for a COVID-19 patient in Gauteng, the North West, the Northern Cape and the Free State, EWN reports.
Meanwhile, Sama Chairperson, Dr Angelique Coetzee said although her organization will be criticised for requesting stricter lockdown or curfew over the weekend, the reality is that people don’t listen anymore as they still gather in large groups over the weekend, SABC reported.
The Health Department reported more than 5000 new daily cases taking the country’s COVID-19 tally to 1 686 041 cases since the start of the pandemic.
