South Africans have once again rallied together to raise funds for the doctor, who became popular on Twitter for offering medical and non-medical advice.
The beloved Dr Sindi Van Zyl has been admitted to a Johannesburg hospital for over a month after being infected with COVID-19.
EWN reported that the doctor’s medical funds depleted and her hospital bill currently sits at around R2-million.
Her husband, Marinus Van Zyl has called on those who have been positively impacted by her to offer whatever they can to cover her bills. “The cost to the family alone has already exceeded one million Rand, and we are running out of funds.”
“She has suffered several complications related to a long stay in ICU, and we need more funds to pay for her continued stay in hospital until her lungs can cope without the ventilator,” he said.
However in the true spirit of Ubuntu, South Africans have already donated over R1-million to the Van Zyl family trust. News 24 reported that Van Zyl’s current ongoing costs are between R 150 000 to R200 000 per week in ICU.
South Africans are urged to keep donating in order to reach their target of R2-million.
