Locals are being warned about a spike in vagrant activity near a core conservation site in Lower Tokai Park. An increase in activity was first noticed earlier this month but has recently become even more frequent.

Vagrants have been spotted actively poaching proteas in the fynbos section of Lower Tokai Park for a number of days and residents are being urged to report any suspicious activity they come across.

Non-profit organisation Parkscape is working together with SANparks to closely manage the situation and ensure the safety of the community in the area.

Community members are being cautioned to be vigilant while hiking or walking near the conservation site. They are reminded to never walk alone and stick to peak times when walking.

Protea bushes found cut and trampled.

Protea bushes have been found with their flowers cut within the conservation area a number of times this month.

Locals are being asked to photograph and report any ares that show clear signs of protea poaching and report these sightings to either Parkscape or SANparks, while staying safe and aware.

Cape Town ETC made attempt to contact SANparks’ section manager for more information but no comment was received at time of publish.

You can report your findings on the Parkscape Facebook page.
